This is my final still life piece. A lot of work and time went in this piece to make it the way it is. The critique questions and the process can be seen by clicking the "Read More" button. Critique Questions Q: Describe the craftsmanship of your drawing. A: Despite having a lot of smudges in the negative space of the piece, I think my drawing contains clean edges and is blended well. I also think that each of the elements from the still life are noticeable and are visible, due to the value being established. Q: Are your values and shadows realistic? How many values did you include? How and why are values important? A: The values and shadows of the piece are somewhat realistic. I believe I could have improved on the shadows of the drawing. I included a variety of values in my piece. Values are important in a drawing since they differentiate between various objects, using shadows and highlighted areas. Q: Is there a clear source of lighting? A: The lighting is centered towards the middle, since that is where all of the values get lighter than the rest of the piece. Q: How important were the composition sketches? Explain. The composition sketches were important since they provided a starting point as to what one wanted to draw. I could get an idea of what objects were in a certain viewpoint and how that would look in my drawing. Q: How is your final drawing successful? A: I believe I captured the values of the objects fairly well. I also am happy with the way the can (middle/bottom left) and the frame turned out. Q: Are the proportions, structure and perspective of the subject correct? A: I believe the proportions and structure of the subject are correct, since I had to change the size and the shape of various objects a few times. I think I could have worked on the perspective a little more, with the can being further up and the frame not being as flat. Q: Does the placement and grouping of objects create a pleasing arrangement? A: I think the grouping of these objects created a very pleasing arrangement, as there were some things that stuck out and some that were uniform. Q: Is there a center of interest and is it well located? A: The center of interest is towards the bottom, since there are the most value changes there. I think it is well located. Q: How well did you manage your time and resources throughout the process of creating this drawing? Do you see where you could improve in this area? A: I managed my time and resources very well throughout the process of creating the drawing. I was always on task and I finished right on time, in which I had extra time to further improve the piece. I would focus on improving the shadows of the flag and the fabric in the piece. Q: What challenges did you encounter during this project and how did you overcome them? A: The main challenge of this project was getting the value of the objects correct. It was hard to differentiate between certain objects in my drawing in the beginning stages, so I had to learn how to add or take away value. Another challenge was getting the size and shape of the objects correct. I had to change both things numerous times throughout the process. Q: What have you learned drawing a still life? A: I have learned that value plays a big role in drawings like these. It is very important to have variations in value in a still life piece, to differentiate between the objects shown. I have also learned to apply pressure at different points when shading with a pencil, as that is how you get blending and variation.
